July 1, 2008: First Transgenic Prairie Vole!
Zoe Donaldson, in collaboration with
Anthony Chan and Shang-Hsun Yang, has successfully generated the first transgenic vole! Within the last few years, lentiviral techniques have been optimized to introduce transgenes into embryos with high efficiency in multiple species. Using this technology, we have generated a line of voles that expresses GFP driven by the ubiquitin promoter. This powerful technology will allow us to test hypotheses regarding gene regulation and social behavior.

We are currently seeking a
Lead Research Specialist to help facilitate the
Vole Genomics Initiative. You will be based in the lab of Dr. James Thomas in the Department of Human Genetics here at Emory University. Research in the Thomas Lab is focused in the field of comparative genetics and genomics as part of comparative mapping project in a variety of species . Primary experimental responsibilities will include development of genotyping assays, subsequent genotyping via PCR, DNA sequencing and gel electrophoresis, genomic library hybridizations and bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) clone fingerprinting. In addition to these specific projects, this position will also include performing other general molecular/cellular biology techniques such as DNA/RNA extractions and RT-PCR as well as the use of a suite of computer programs to be used in the development of the vole genetic map and comparative physical maps. Applicants are expected to be responsible and dedicated individuals with strong organizational skills, the ability to work independently and with others, and significant experience working in a research laboratory setting. Demonstrated experience with large-scale genotyping projects or with screening genomic libraries is preferred but not required.
